Helen Bell
The artist majored in Art and English at Western Maryland College and continued her studies at the Maryland Institute of Art. She received a merit scholarship from the Telfair Academy of Arts and Sciences (now the Savannah College of Art and Design). The artist continues to sharpen her skills and perception by taking university, museum and private courses on a continuing basis.
Arriving in California, the artist focused on contemporary work and had solo exhibits at Rizzoli International, South Coast Plaza, Costa Mesa, California; Zola Fine Art, Los Angeles, California, EOS Gallery, Redlands, California and was represented for several years by Valerie Miller Fine Art , Palm Desert, California. Her work was exhibited at the sales and rental gallery of the Newport Harbor Museum, Newport Beach, California and later, her large metal and acrylic works were in the corporate rental program of the Los Angeles County Museum of Art in Los Angeles, California. Her extravagant constructions were selected for a commission by Urretia Architects of Palm Desert for the Sheraton
Hotel (now Marriott) in Riverside. The artist was selected for inclusion in the recently published California Art Review, 2nd Edition.
The artist is a juried member of the prestigious National Association of Women Artists founded in 1889 and has been chosen for inclusion in Who’s Who in the West, Who’s Who of American Women and, Who’s Who in America. She has served on the boards of the Riverside Art Museum and the Redlands Art Association, is a painting member of the California Art Club, the Laguna Plein Air Painters Association, the Southern California Plein Air Painters Association and the Riverside Plein Air Painters Association.
The artist’s work has varied over the years to include oil painting, printmaking, metal sculpture and assemblage and while adhering to the oft admonishment to artists “Do What You Love”, this artist LOVES IT ALL. Being prolific is a must.
For several years a significant body of her work has been Plein Air which resulted in two solo exhibits of the California Missions – one at the Riverside Art Museum and the other at the Mission San Juan Capistrano. A “quick draw” painting selected by the Board of the Riverside Art Museum to celebrate the 80th anniversary of the Museum’s building by architect Julia Morgan was reproduced in posters, Giclees and will be featured art on the Museum’s legacy brochure. More recently her “Autumn at O’Neill” received the Orange County Parks singular award.
